Career Tracks

GS Lab has a clear separation of engineering career tracks for its employees, viz., development, QA, Customer support, and IT. Progress through this career path is strictly competence based. GS Lab believes in consistent long term performance of individuals.

Member of Technical Staff (MTS): A campus recruit with an engineering degree in Computer Science is appointed as MTS. She is expected to become a sound software engineer with a variety of skills over a tenure which lasts for five years for a typical GS Lab campus hire.

Senior Member of Technical Staff (SMTS): The SMTS tenure at GS Lab is also expected to be approximately five years long before the person is eligible for promotion to the next level.

Midway through the SMTS tenure, each engineer makes a choice between picking the “architect” or the “manager” career path. If she chooses the architect career path, she is encouraged to choose a technical specialty to pursue. If she chooses a manager career path, she is groomed in delivery related responsibilities such as project management, customer management and managing teams.

During the tenure as an SMTS, the engineer is expected to demonstrate strong design and implementation skills, complete independence, and technology or people leadership skills in order to get promoted to the next level.

Software Architect (Architect): A software architect at GS Lab possesses deep expertise in a specific technical specialty and is an individual contributor. She is considered a clear expert in her specialty across the Company as well as outside. She is expected to write code on a daily basis and provide technical mentoring to junior staff as well as maintain the leadership for the Company in that area.

Technical Manager (TM): A technical manager at GS Lab possesses excellent team leadership skills and directly interacts with the customer. She is fully responsible for all aspects of the release worked on by the group she leads. GS Lab expects a manager to have approximately eight direct reports.

A TM and an Architect are considered peers in the GS Lab hierarchy.

GS Lab is proud to observe that the standards set for promotions are far higher than those typically found among companies in India. Also, its simple yet clear career path is greatly appreciated by its staff.
